This means the XM5s have a premium price tag but, when you can afford it, there are more superior wireless over-ear headphones on the market.

The XM5s have a lot of features that simplify the lives of the listener, and also automate tasks that they'd otherwise need to perform manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near hi-res) is also included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. That allows for streaming of high-quality audio at rates that are higher than traditional Bluetooth. The built-in microphone is capable of making calls hands-free.

Similar to the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel at noise cancellation. They are among the top in reducing the constant drones that are heard in subway and train carriages. The XM5s are also excellent at separating listeners from the noises of busy airports and streets.

Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s may not be as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and openness also. For instance, the bass track on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys muscles with real force and definition without flattening the other elements. Similar to Massive Attack's brooding Angel shows off the XM5s ability to create accurate and precise bass notes.

Battery life is excellent with up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is active and 40 hours if off. This is enough to cover the weekend or a few days' heavy use.

The XM5s aren't waterproof or dust-proof. Sony actually recommends not sweating in them or taking them out in the rain. This might not be a big deal for everyone else however, for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a rainy area it could be a major problem.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of over-ear wireless headphones equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. Apple created dynamic drivers that measure 40mm with a neutral sound profile that focuses on mids and highs without going overboard. This makes them great for both music and movies. They also have superior fidelity compared to most other headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and feel comfortable on your head. The ear cups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric and sit comfortably over the ears they do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges provide a strong, but not too much clamping force that ensures the ear cups remain in position during listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button at the top of the right earcup. There's also a button that can be pushed, like a jog-dial, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can twist for volume control and press it once, twice or thrice to playback control. Siri is activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are easy to use and are well-placed, but I would have liked to have the power button that could shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when they are removed from your ear or placed in their case. They only wake up when you put them on your head once more.

Another great feature is spatial audio, which makes use of the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to figure out the direction you're moving in, and then repositions the sound to create the illusion that they're coming from these locations. This gives you a theater-like experience with movies and videos that were recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able to enjoy it with other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I'd be a bit disappointed when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the newer model would be better within a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and a better battery performance, so it's hard to justify the extra cost for most people.
