You can create the bot by connecting it to its base, and connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial configuration (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, the name of it, etc.). Once the D4 has been fully charged it's time to start cleaning.

Once you've got the D4 running and you're ready to use the app to create an automatic schedule or manually begin cleaning whenever you want. You can also control it using your voice via Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you have an Apple Watch you can start a cleaning session by tapping your wrist.

In our tests, this model cleaned well on both hard and carpeted floors and picked up 91.3 percent of the debris in serpentine pathways. However it's not as effective at edge and corner cleaning as other models. The side sensors keep the D4 approximately 1.5 inches away from walls. Also, it doesn't have the side-sweeping brush found on all robotic cleaners. Its raised turret also means that it can't be used under furniture with low clearance. It does have virtual No-Go Lines. So you can draw red lines on your floor plan and tell the D4 to stay away from this area. The battery time of 75 minutes is also fairly average. This is an acceptable price for the convenience of this model.

2. IRobot Roomba 980

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the top-of-the-line robot in the company's lineup with a promise of top performance and features that are connected. The 980 is priced at $899/PS899 but it's typically cheaper if you shop around on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to start).

The 980 is the most advanced of our top choices. It comes with a HEPA filter that can capture micronized dust and allergens, which can improve the air quality in your house. It is also compatible with a wide range of flooring materials including tiles and hardwoods.

One of the most prominent characteristics of the 980 is its top-mounted camera and SLAM sensor which enable it to navigate more efficiently than other Roombas even in tight spaces like hallways and corners. iRobot calls this technology iAdapt 2.0, and it makes use of snapshots taken by the camera to create an internal map. This feature is only available on the 980 and it's a nice addition that makes the otherwise fairly expensive machine more comfortable to own.

3. iRobot Roomba 985

Its exclusive dirt detection system warns you when areas need extra attention. Smart sensors ensure it stays clear of dangerous obstacles and stairs. It also recharges automatically and continue cleaning until the task has been completed. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology let it navigate an entire level of your home, while keeping the track of the areas it's been to and what rooms it's yet to clean.

Its low profile makes it easier to get under furniture and other items where dust, pet hair and dirt can hide. It can also remove dirt from edges and corners, unlike many robot vacuums. It's also simple to schedule cleaning sessions from anywhere, using the iRobot app or by using your voice with Alexa and Google Assistant.

It is also the most powerful vacuum. It is able to clean up dirt with deeper particles or pet hairs that are larger, unlike other mid-range models like the Roomba 960. This is due to the fact that the cleaner comes with larger brushes that rotate counter-clockwise, and an engine with more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is also iRobot's least expensive vacuum with recharge and resume, but it doesn't come with the auto-empty system that both the I6+ and I7 offer. It also doesn't have iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 employs to track objects and avoid obstacles. This means that it isn't able to save maps or use within-app features such as no-go zones.

Another issue is that the iRobot-995 doesn't come with mopping capabilities. While this isn't an issue if you only require a top vacuum, it's a big drawback for anyone interested in hybrid robots.

The other iRobot that has automatic emptying is the Combo J7+, which can vacuum and mop. It comes with the same navigation system as the I6+ or I7, but it lacks iAdapt 2.0. It can't save any maps and doesn't have the same in-app containment options like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however, have improved automation through iRobot Genius and can learn your cleaning habits to automate cleaning schedules. It also has a bigger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 - it holds 2.5 Liters of debris which is more than enough to last 60 days.

5. IRobot Roomba 960

The 960 is a more expensive alternative to the 980. It offers the same capabilities but in a smaller size. It's still excellent on bare floors and carpeted rooms, picking up food crumbs, tracked-in dirt, and bits of torn paper with ease. And it's excellent in navigating and avoiding obstacles. It does a good job of cleaning dirt that has been embedded.

The robot utilizes iAdapt 2.0 navigation to keep track of where it is, which allows it to navigate around efficiently and avoid getting stuck. It can see the floor as well as its obstacles and objects by using SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It even has low profile, which lets it go under couches and tables. It is also rechargeable at its dock if it is needed.

Although it isn't equipped with some of the latest features, like map-saving and selective room cleaning the 960's navigation is far superior to other robots. It also has a larger dust bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home application for iOS or Android lets you control the 960. It provides a variety of features for automation, including the ability to set up cleaning preferences, schedule, trigger spot cleanings and monitor the battery status. You can monitor the vacuum's location, and receive notifications if the dirt container is full. The 960 also allows voice commands using Alexa and Google Assistant. The iRobot Roomba 960 is an excellent choice for most households. It's well-built, has less recurring expenses and comes with a larger dirt compartment, and can be charged faster than the eufy RoboVac 11.
