It can also plan and execute spot cleaning sessions. It performed well in standard tests, but did not perform as well as the Roomba j7+ during the carpet deep cleaning test.

Using the companion app, you can program the S7 to run a cleaning cycle according to your schedule. You can specify a time, day, or week as well as choose from several cleaning modes, like automatic, eco, and deep clean. You can also select whether the robot will stop when its power is exhausted or when it comes across an obstruction.

It's easy to set up, comes with an enormous bin that's easy to empty (albeit a bit loudly) into a trash can when it's full and can be programmed to do a complete home clean on a schedule or when needed.

The IQ XL can connect to your home WiFi, which allows you to monitor it via the Shark app and check its battery level as it cleans. The app lets you create cleaning schedules, get push notifications about its status, pause and resume cleaning, or set it to only one room. You can also control it via voice commands with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The app can tell you the power mode it's currently in--Eco, Normal, or Max--but we didn't find that any of the modes made a significant difference to cleaning performance.

The IQ XL will automatically empty the trash bin at the end of a cleaning cycle into the base, and then automatically empty itself. The bin can hold up to 60 days of debris so it won't be required to empty it more than once unless your pets have hair that is long. If you must empty it, all you need to do is remove the side bin, hold it up to a trash can, and press a button to empty its contents.

The Shark IQ XL is a great vacuum cleaner. It does a great job cleaning floors that are not bare and it can maneuver itself well. However, the Shark IQ XL feels a bit less sturdy than the Roomba 694. It removes a lot of debris on carpeted floors and does a good job of maneuvering itself, but it doesn't come close to matching the iRobot Roomba i7 in terms of performance on carpeted floors. The i7 is also better-built and feels more durable. It is robust, has lower maintenance requirements, has lower monthly costs, and charges faster, while offering similar battery performance and the most advanced automation features, such as no-go zones and the capability to pick specific rooms to keep clean.

iRobot J7+

This robot vac/mop combination is a rarity because it can do both tasks extremely efficiently. The iRobot Combo j7+ has all the advantages of its j7-based counterpart, including self emptying robot vacuum mop-emptying and LiDAR mapping, however, it also comes with additional features for mopping and vacuuming.

As with most robotic vacuums the j7+ is quiet while it's running. It's even less noisy when it's mopping. The highest reading we could get on our decibel meter was 64db, which is comparable to the noise of general office chatter.

It's simple to establish a schedule for cleaning and adjust what the j7+ does when its dust container is full. The j7+ can be controlled by voice assistants, such as Alexa, Google Assistant and others. The app allows you to create and view maps within your home.

In our tests, we found that the j7+ was a solid performer on both hard and carpeted floors, and it cleaned up most of the dirt we threw at it. It has a difficult time dealing with pet hair, large pieces of debris and sand. However, it is able to remove them with a bit more effort. It also has good navigation capabilities, as well as a pair of cliff sensors that stop it from falling down the stairs or stumbling on furniture legs.
