The J7+ from iRobot was a great obstacle-avoiding robot, but it did not always do a good job at avoiding dirt or crumbs on my rugs. It also was known to over-vacuum certain areas, leading to a lot of dust in the filters and an unclean home.

Smart Mapping

Some of the best robot vacuums have an app that can help you customize cleaning modes, set schedules and see the area of floor that the machine covers. This is a great feature that other models do not have. It allows you to create profiles that automatically start the robot at specific times, and keep it running continuously. For instance, you could clean the living room each morning or prior to dinner.

A good app can let you control your robot using voice commands. Some models are compatible with Amazon's Alexa and Google Assistant, which allows you to control your robot with voice commands.
