Door handles seem like an insignificant thing, but if you dislike the appearance of the handles or are finding them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. Installing a new door handle is easy if you have patience.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates which hide the screws to give them an attractive look. However, you'll need to attach them separately if your new handle does not have them attached already.

Remove the handle that was previously used

The door handle is not only a decoration for your home, but it's also an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock your door. Over time, the door handle may become loose or feel loose. It might also begin to look worn out and old. This is an indication that it's the time to replace your door handle.

Now you can move on to making the new door strike plate to be installed. Using the wood screws that came with your new handles, attach the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Do not tighten the screws too much because this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, close and open the door to check whether it locks and closes correctly. If not, you'll need to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or move it forward or back, until the door closes and latches properly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you might have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that aren't narrow, the wrong size latch or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but using the use of a metal file instead an hammer and chisel.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is the metal piece that is angled that moves between the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into a hole in the door frame to keep the door shut. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch may be all that's needed to fix it.

It's difficult to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that lets you to insert a screwdriver in order to pry it off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch, as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.

If the latch isn't easily removed then use a paperclip tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed latch slot and gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. It is possible repeat this process a few times before you can pull the latch out.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any issues after you've removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers, and then use your new screws to secure it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before you install the new handle, be certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Also, make sure whether the size of the latch on the new handle is a good match to this measurement.

You'll require a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the handle and latch or if your current one is damaged. If you're not replacing the locks, however, a new latch should fit in the existing recess and be compatible with your current keys. Be sure to choose an entry point with a rectangular cover plate that match the handles you have.

Remove the cover plate
